Exposing Local Authors | Inspiring Aspiring Writers | Dancing with Words as a Community
Our little endeavor, "Us & Friends: Education for Everyone", is pleased to announce a project we've been wanting to pursue for some time: "Danzas con Palabras". Inspired by the University of Montana Western's "O. Alan Weltzien Visiting Writers Series", formerly, "Dances with Words", "Danzas con Palabras" is a new and ongoing monthly series that features a diversity of local authors, styles, and genres. The goal is to provide exposure for authors, inspiration for aspiring writers, and quality literary events for the community of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico.
While the majority of featured authors are relatively established, working, local authors--deliberate exceptions are intended--we want to provide space and opportunity "for everyone". We are not interested in propagating the subtle temptation of literary elitism and consequent cliques that too easily and often, despite initial intentions, can arise within projects such as this; we want to give opportunity to the many voices and stories that may never have the chance to be featured because of one reason or another. That is not to say, we are not interested in quality--we are--but we believe everyone has a quality story to tell if given the chance.
One exciting example is a group of homeschooled students who have been taking a two-semester creative writing course focused on poetry. This course will culminate in a published anthology of their collective poetry and the presentation of their hard work as Danzas con Palabras's featured authors! Danzas con Palabras also hopes to occasionally feature non-local authors as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
Mostly, we want to provide opportunities to listen to others--their hopes and fears, moments of bliss and heartbreak, and diverse perspectives--we want to listen to stories that may be very different from our own. We hope you join us.
